Quaranitine tank suggestions

Hello everyone. I just got accepted to a summer job and I'm going to be making around $8.00 a hour and I need help suggestion on how to set up a Quarantine tank once I get paid.. I'm thinking about selling one of my 2 gallon tanks on craiglists and used some of that money to get some things for the future Quaranitine tank and whether or not it should be fancy. I was thinking on getting a 6 gallon tank or container depending on whats cheaper to use that so that in the future if I want to add fish. What minimum size tank or container do you all reconmend? I was going to do a fishless cycle but I can't find any "pure" ammonia near me. The closes one that sells ammonia is Family Dollar but they don't have pure ammonia( meaning the ammonia that doesnt have the sufacants or anything.) I live in Chicago so if anyone can help me out( if someoe is from chicago) to pm me what stores that might sell ammonia.

Thanks.

Most big box stores sell 10 gal. tanks for 10-$15. Get a glass top and a sponge filter with a small air pump and your done. The whole thing should set you back $30. Also check Craigslist, you can often do even better than that. Many people do not cycle their quarantine tank unless it will be in constant use, its just extra work. Instead put your sponge filter in your regular tank and then when you need to use your quarantine tank move it over, when your done rinse it and put it back in your regular tank, unless you are treating a sick fish that is.

Here is a little link to QT tank specs. You can also browse the rest of the article for info on disease prevention.

Hope it helps!! You are very wise to want to use QT tank.

You need another 10 g I would actually suggest that you get a 30g and use that 10 g as qt/hospital tank.

Well the thing is that i want to reuse the stand I got now from my granddad before he passed away to used that for the larger tank instead of buying a new one. The stand iss like 24 inches wide and about 15 inches in width.( 24" X 15" from the top )

And it depends how much I'll be getting. Hopefully I'll will be able to afford tank larger than 10 gallons

Thanks for the help guys.

^So the 20 gallon tall would fit on the table?

Tommrow I'm taking my male platy to the pet store. They might give me something with him. And in July they are going to have a yard sale mostly tanks and stands. So hopefully I'll find a tank bigger than 10 gallons for a cheap price or I just go dumpster diving. lol

Have a look at this:

Setting Up A Quarantine/Hospital Tank

In short, I think the best way to go about it is to buy the equipment you need, let the tank sit around empty with the filter running on a permanently set up tank, then move the filter (and decor, too, if you want) to the quarantine tank when it's needed. That way you don't have to worry about putting new or sick fish into an uncycled tank or, you don't have to worry about how to keep the thing cycled yet able to have fish put in it without causing problems.

Oh okay. I'm looking up for used 20 gallon tanks right now and I'll just keep adding money until then.
I'll just buy a new filter for my 10 gallon so that the filter will have some bacteria in it. and then just transfer it to the new tank adding water from my 10 gallon with the fish and snail, add new water and put the rest of the decor and keep my 10 gallon empty for when I added new fish or sick fish. So basically a quaranitine tank is an emergancy tank from what I am reading..

Good plain right??
