Quality LFS advice?

I explained to the sales assistant in my least favourite LFS today that I needed to cycle my new big tank and asked if they sold ammonia as I wanted to carry out a fishless cycle. Reason being, the fish i used to cycle my small tank were now either dead or abnormal behaving and I didn't want to put any more fish through that.

He strongly advised that I shouldn't put ammonia in water the point of the cycle is to remove ammonia and by adding it "you're adding something you're trying to get rid of so whats the point?" I could tell that me explaining to him how the fishless cycle worked would be wasting my breath.

He went on to explain that if i put the substrate in, add the water, set up the heater, filter and pump and ran it like that for 2 weeks, the cycle would be complete. I didn't attempt to correct him and stood there appreciating the entertainment value of the situation as he was supposed to be the more knowledgable one.

Comment at will.

Well don't blame the currier for bad advice. It is more likely that that is the way he was trained by the LFS. If the LFS made sure that everything was fine and that you knew exactly how to cycle your tank they would make less money because the fish would survive when you put them in there.

2 weeks is not long enough in most cases unless you manage to get a good batch or Biospira. 6 weeks is the minimum I will cycle a tank regardless of what my test results say.

I would ask the LFS person one question though: If you never add ammonia via a direct source of through fish waste, what feeds the nitrifying bacteria and keeps them alive?
