Problems with Gouramis

Hi All,

I am having trouble with my tank. I have been keeping fish for ten years, but always guppies, golds and such. Just recently I started a tank (well converted an existing tank) with 2 dwarf gouramis, 3 cory cat fish, 8 neons, and 1 otto. Everything was ok till about 4 days ago when the gouramis started building a nest, they became very aggressive. My cories will not come out of the cave I have in there and that is very sad, becuase they are my favourites. The tank is 10 gallons, well planted with a variety of live plants. What should I do? Will the cories ever come out again or should I find a new home for the gouramies. I was thinking of replacing the gouramies with a coupl more cories, and a couple more neons. Suggestions??

Thanks in advance :)

You have a male and female gourami? I would suggest returning them if possible. Your cories would be much happier with a couple more friends of their own kind. A 10gal does not give them much room to get away from unfriendly fish.

It sounds like they are getting ready to spawn. I know that gouramis are territorial. Someone else should be able to tell you more than I can.

If they are spawning, that would be kinda special, so often tho the young male is just practicing. How big are they? If they're over 1.5" they could be spawning and should be moved to a smaller, half full tank, if you want to breed them search under the name of the fish, instructions are specific for each one. Not interested? remove the nest with a fish net.

You could always return just one of the gouramis. Usually gouramis are peaceful community residents when not in spawning mode, so if you had only one you shouldn't have problems.
