? problem using a pool filter

Would there be any problems using the pool filter from those above ground pools? I was thinking about making my own bio wheel out of one.

i have a guy that runs his fish room off of a pool filter.. he just made sure it was new and never used with chemicals before he used it (had it factory shipped to his house).. if getting a used one i would be very concerned with chemicals in it i am not sure even a lot of water conditioner could ever take it out....
