Power Outages

I live in WV which I am sure everyone knows by now is going to get a bit of snow from Hurricane Sandy. If our power goes out what do I need to do to ensure my fish will survive the power outage? The temperature will not be a problem as the tank is downstairs which is heated by a woodstove. I am most concerned about the filters being off. The tank is planted and 55 gallons.

temp is the main concern. the fish could go a while w/o the filters if necessary imo. i use an inverter and run it off a portable 12v jump box (to jump start cars) i also have a couple car batteries i can use if need be.

i dont run it all the time just on occasion to keep the temp up. i also use it to run the heat mats for my snakes. aswell as the blower motor on my fireplace insert if i dont wanna use the stove in the cellar. also its nice to ba able to run a small light and charge things. hell i could go on the internet if i wanted to hook up the stuff to it.

Well the temp will still drop even with the wood stove. Wrapping blankets around the tank will help. For the filters, remove the media once the power goes out. With water stops circulating and bringing oxygen to the filter, the crap that's in there will quickly decompose and turn the water anoxic. If you have batter-powered air pumps (bait bucket aerators work, too), you can run those in your tanks to keep them oxygenated. If you can, position the filter media over the bubble stream to get the most water flow through them. If you have a sponge filter, that's even better. Hook it up to the battery-powered air pump.

I have friends in the Blue Ridge and they've been getting snow for a while now. I hope you and your fish make it through the storm okay!
