I have a 55 gallon tank. A friend give me 2 power heads. The tank is fresh water. Will they work in my tank ? I am setting it up as a community tank for schooling fish. Would this work with my tank set up ? They say power 55 on them. I dont know much about why or how they work. Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks,
Jerry

Well, the main reason for powerheads would be to increase current in the tank. So it really depends on how the tank is set up as to if you need them or not. On a 55 if you only have one large filter on one end, it is possible that you could put a powerhead on the other end instead of another filter to make sure not to have any dead spots. One reason not to put a powerhead in is if the tank is planted. A lot of current usually means more oxygen which the plants wont like.

I am not familiar with the model, and some powerheads are meant to be submersable while others are not. Ask your friend if he had them submersed, and there is your answer. As to where to put them, usually they either hang on the rim, or have suction cups for the side of the tank. If it doesn't hang on the rim, then it is probably meant to be submersable. The cord in the water is no big deal, just like your heater's cord!
