Possible stand problem???

Ok, I have a 20 g. LONG tank now which is 30 in. long and I just found out that my stand is only 28 inches long... its 2 inches short!

I could let the aquarium hang 1 inch on each side and center it as best I can but the pressure on both side of the tank might cause it to break though?

You guys think that can happen or would it hold my tank just fine?

What is the stand made of and how is it designed? A 20g tank will have about 200lbs of weight in it (plus glass) after substrate and all that is accounted for. If the stand is designed to take the pressure directly at certain points, it may be an issue.

Though a 20g tank I don't think would be too much of an issue. You may want to give it a bit before stocking just in case. It's not the stands that crack immediately that are the problem, it's the ones that degrade for a while before they break that will get you. ;)

personally I wouldnt do it. It may work but I believe you would add unneeded stress to the sides of your tank...even if its not much. 20 gallons of water can do a lot of damage to a floor/carpeting and thats not worth it. If you are going to do it though, make sure the stand is perfectly level first. If the stand is not level than you have a great deal of the water weight shifted to one side which could continue to shift over time. If the edges are not supported, that could be detrimental.

Ummm, now that you say you aren't sure what type of wood, and it's old, I'd suggest yes, getting a brand new stand specifically designed for aquarium support.

They're not too expensive, I bought mine, which was solid mahogany oak for $100.00. 36" long, for a 36" long tank. :D :D

 That's pretty expensive for me...

This kind of stand would do it, only cost about 40 bucks! :)
