Pool Sand Substrate and Air Stone

I'm digging the look of having the AirStone releasing bubbles in my 125gal. I understand some people will say that its pointless to have them, but its purelt for looks. Now my question...

Is there a specific way to set up an AirStone in an aquarium with sand substrate. Can I place the airstones under the sand to hide it, or does the airstone need to be clear of any substrate?

125Gal: 7 Silver Dollars, 1 Albino BN Plecos, 1 Green Terror, 1 Gold Severum, Red Severum, 8 Rio Cahals, and 2 Festivum

55Gal: 3 German Blue Rams, 2 Bolivian Rams, 1 Super Red Pleco, 9 Bloodfin Tetras, and 9 Oto Catfish

29Gal: Quarentine/Hospital Tank

20Gal: Female Pastel Ball Python

You could put it under sand. Too deep, and there won't be enough pressure for it to form bubbles and you could damage the pump. Regardless though, the bubbles would just push up on the sand is move it out of the way. You would just end up with a crater with the air stone in the center.
