I have that test and it's because the regular Ph test only goes to 7.6 and the other test goes to 8.8.

To add to the topic I think you should try your best to get your son to accept doing a fishless cycle, so the fish don't keep dying. It generally goes faster than with fish because you don't need to do water changes.
