Please help ID this algae

Hi guys,

I've been seeing a gradual increase in this tufty, fluffy, cobweb-like growth especially where there is the most light exposure. I've attached a photo of it growing on Java Fern leaves. Upon removal (it comes off very easily), it looks brownish on my finger, and it disintegrates into a mush when I rub it. The tank is still establishing, is currently an empty fishless aquatic garden. Hardness 15 dGH, KH 10, PH ~8. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

upon further searching, it might be filamentous diatoms seeing that it turns to mush when I rub it between my fingers - does that sound plausible? I have been seeing the brown dusty type of diatoms already.
