Please help

I have a 55 gallon with 30-60 filter soon to be a canister? filter I have several live plants 4 platys, 4 fancy guppies, 1 firebelly newt, 1 african drawf frog, 1 pleco and they have been added a few at a time and have all been in there for about 2 weeks now and they are doing great and I even have a few platy fry ( they run and hide I havent been able to catch them) Well my question is I really want sand instead of the rocks in there how would I go about this and how hard would this be? Also I was thinking of adding a few more in the future what would be good and get along and how many...? Thank you all for your help[/list]
