My birthday is coming up next month and my boyfriend just told me he was going to get me a second tank! (yay!).
Im looking at getting at least a 29g but due to space issues I'm a bit limited on how long I can go. I'm planning on doing it fully planted with black sand substrate.
The pH of my tap is around 7.3ish.
Here is my question.. My first tank is purely shoaling fish. Its all tetra and cory's. I really like this tank but I wanted to see what other options I might have as far stocking goes.
I was looking at maybe a species tiger barb tank.. but that is all I've been able to come up with so far. If I cant come up with anything I'll just default back to getting more tetra.
Maybe some of you guys with tons of aquarium experience can throw around some ideas as far as stocking with some fish. (I'm so excited!)
have you thought about anything other than fish ?
hermit crabs,frogs.the list goes on
tiger barbs are great fish, best kept in a large group, the larger the better, open
swimmimg space, planted edges, and you can mix the colours too, would make a very cool tank.
You've really got alot of options. With your PH pretty close to neutral or "pure" theres very few fish that cant handle that. You can do cichlids, have a gourami or maybe even a pair. Perhaps just click on random profiles and see if anything catches your interest. I'm not familiar with barbs so I really cant say if you could build on your tiger barb tank.
I thought about cichlids. My dad used to have a 120g african cichlid tank. I know they dont do well with plants though.
What would be my options with cichlids as far as ones that will work with plants and would you be able to have other fish? Or is it cichlids only?
I thought about gourami too. But theres just not a lot of choices as far as gourami go around here. Though I do find honey gouramis to be VERY cute!
@willow: I thought about getting a turtle! But I want to wait until Im not living in a rental place and I have more space. Right now I just want a nice display tank for our living room and we have a wood stand we can fit a nice tank on.
Tiger barbs are nasty little things. If you only had tigers that would be fine.
Cherry barbs on the other hand are peaceful and you could do other types of fish if you wanted.
In my 46 I have 6 cherry barbs, 2 red sailfin Mollies, 7 rasboras, and 4 spotted cories. The Cories are definitely my favorite right now. They will not stop playing in the current. Really fun to watch. Sorry I don't know what exact Cory they are. They are covered in black spots, really active.
With cichlids you would have a choice of several different dwarf types that would work, bolivian ram, cockatoo dwarf cichlid, checkerboard cichlid, kribensis are some that would work. Most of them will be fine with other fish, some may be a little territorial if spawning or raising fry. You can read more about them in the fish profiles, or click on the highlighted names. You could do gourami, but from what I have seen they can really limit the type of fish that you can have with them.
I have bolivian rams in my community tank and overall they leave everyone else alone. Every once in awhile during feeding I will see them extend their dorsal fin at the other fish, and sometimes a little bit of lip locking with each other. But overall the tank is fairly peaceful.
