Well the peopl at the lfs said in that sized tank i could have 30-35 fish.
Well im getting all males for the gouramis, and i know at urll say!!
I like the neon tetras or the glowlight tetras! I dont know what other tetras are like? Do u know any good tetras.

6 danios (zebra or leopard)
5-6 corys
5 red honey gouramis male
1 pleco (clown/bristle nosed)
And maybe a small shoal of tetras

oh no..no no no. never trust what the fish store people tell you! saying 'you can have 30 fish' doesn't mean you can have thirty fish...i mean, someone might hear that and put 30 fish that would grow to a foot long in the tank...see my point?
luckily all the fish on your stock list are small and, with the possible exception of the gouramis, peaceful...but i still think you're overstocking.
i've never had much luck with tiny tetras like neons - they get sucked into filters too easily. i love glowlight tetras, and i'd reccomend them even though i haven't kept them...they do like soft acid water though, which applies to all south american tetras. i'm no expert on tetras so maybe leave that to someone else to help you with...
any chance you could eliminate either the danios or the tetras from your stock list? would help with the possible-overstocking-problem..
i saw cherry barbs in the tank with the honey gouramis - they are nice little shoaling fish, maybe have some of those instead of tetras or danios? just a thought - i'm going to get some at some point i think.
just trying to help so that you don't end up with dead fish. that's never nice to have to go through and it can be prevented with a sensible stocking list. :)

I knwo what your saying im not quite sure yet, but im probably going with that :-? i was thinking glowlight tetras, or i might get a few extra danios??

I wont to go with wat ur sayin but also my LFS shop :|
Ive had an idea, i start with the danios after 2 weeks of tank setup, then gouramis, then corys and pleco, and after a few months if its all going well i could get some tetras.

tsk, tsk, tsk. you should always trust the advice given to you on this site over any fish store, i'm afraid. :p in the end, it will save you lots of money and dead fish. i'm serious...when i joined this site i was about to put more fish into an already overstocked 6 gallon tank, and everyone convinced me to set up my 15 gallon instead. i'm glad i did. not saying you should be looking for a bigger tank, just saying to choose your stocking list carefully.

Well i do beleive you but i kinda beleive the LFS, i am skipping the tetras and getting maybe
10 danios (zebra or leopard)
5-6 corys
5 red honey gouramis male
1 pleco (clown/bristle nosed)

All of those fish in that list come to £71 and thats the bristle nose not the cheaper clown pleco

i would still start of with fewer gouramis. u can always get more later on if they behave themselves. did they have any females? i'm just curious to know what they looked like, dont think i've ever seen one in person.

Soory while im typing my reply u r reply comes and i dont include what i was gunna say in that one im not being rude i jst take so long typing!! They did have females but there were greyish, i think i may start with fewer u can always add more but cant tanke away!!

#14 ·
Thnk you for all ur help, haqve u had any experiance with danios?

#17 ·
yeah, i'm going to do a south east asian biotope and i wanted some small peaceful shoaling fish, and cherry barbs came to mind. i don't have any yet and i don't know when my mum will be ok with taking me to the lfs :-? but once i have them i could maybe tell you how they behave and stuff?

#18 ·
Ok cool, but ive heard that barbs can be quite aggressive and fin nippers

#19 ·
you're thinking of tiger barbs, and yes they are a menace (not that i've ever had any...too scared to haha)
the Cherry Barb (click on the name and you'll get the species profile for them) are hardy and fairly peaceful shoaling fish, though. they are cute little fish IMO...

#41 ·
thats wat i was thinking using them as a cycling fish!:)

#23 ·
Ok kl, i have to go now but ill be on later if u are im not sure wat the time is were u are

What sized tank is it and what kind of filtration are you using?
If its that 20 gallon goldfish tank in the profile, then not just no but hell no without some great filtration. 1" per gallon is a good approximate rule of thumb, especially when dealing with the more common "**pet smart" fish(this changes greatly with more advanced and oddball fish).

Do note, people here are way more experienced than some minimum waged pet store guy for the most part. There are exceptions but they are rare and usually working at a pet store is a side gig for them. People who do stuff at work rarely like to do it at home too, when I was a low voltage tech, my landlord couldnt pay me to run cables in her rental houses in my off time.

Here you have quite a few hobbyist breeders, a couple commercial breeders, reefers who know more about water chemistry than quite a few chemists, and a few tech junkies who have tried every new gadget on the market for their tanks. Faced against some guy out of high school working a minimum waged job and told by his boss to selll stuff and really not worrying too much about it since it isnt his tank, the people on this board(and other similar boards) will out knowledge as a whole any pet store out there. Not to mention, who is getting your money and has the most interest in doing so? So when a consensus tells you something, they probably are more right than the pet store.

**a better than my normal term of endearment for the super common, bread and butter fish commonly sold at Pet Smart, PetCo and pretty much every other mass retail pet store out there. You can usually find many of them at private pet stores as well at a slightly higher price. Yes, even my beloved Harlequin Raspboras I would count as a trash fish.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Thank you for this post. I wish I would have kept a diary of everything that a LFS employee has told me when I was first starting out that in the end was wrong. Luckily for me I ignored their advice and heeded the advice from all the truly helpful members here. Nothing quite like the feeling of success first time out of the starting gate!

Fishboy, we are your friends! Those LFS employees just want your money, we don't. ;-)

There's going to be some problems with that many fish in such a small tank. The people on this site have been amazing and have saved my tank. The petshop told me things, which almost killed off my tank. I started inquiring on this site and they saved my butt! You'll end up much happier, as will your fish, if you just take peoples knowledge into consideration.

Its a very good filter, one of the best apperently! Its quite large, and is a good size for realy good filtration

#31 ·
You dont know the name of said filter? Is it a canister filter, a wet dry filter, a hang on back filter. I think each of us has our own ideas of the best filter. Did your store recommend the filter? More than a decade ago I learned the first rule of aquariums, never ever trust the fish store. Also never pay fish store prices for what you can get far cheaper online, bulbs for example.

#32 ·
It all comes in the tank, a filter heater and thermometer. And i prefer buying from the store. And the tank is 90l

#34 ·
I knwo that, im 12 years old just wanting a nice planted first tropical tank with a variety of species and colour! I know wat ur saying and i understand but................

#35 · (Edited)
Hey, whatever floats your boat, you are probably paying double however. The filter is most likely a hang on the back. Is it an Emperor or Aquaclear? Those are about the only two brand I would trust for HOBs. Is your tank 90 liters(23 gallons)?

Oh geez, he said planted, a whole new can of worms has been opened lol. What kind of substrate? What kind of lighting? How much research have you actually done on the subject? You likely will find a Lotech setup is the way to go on a limited budget. Thankfully lighting for as small a tank as I expect you have should be relatively cheap and easy to make happen. You will be more limited in fish but I think the rewards of a planted tank are much better than a standard community tank. The fish are cooler(well the ones I would put into it if i wasnt using mine as a breeding tank. I love ambush predators and guoramis) and happier in a planted tank.
