Phosphates with plants??

What would be the harm in using a phosphate buffer with live plants in the tank? I see in the information on the bottle of buffer that it says not to use it if you have live plants.

If the instruction say no, don't do it. Phosphate buffer is not recommended for planted aquarium because phosphate is the primary cause for algae growth which quickly over takes your planted aquarium. Although phosphate buffer is stronger that non-phosphate based, using a non-phosphate buffer is still good enough. I have a planted tank and I don't use a phosphate-buffer.

The only live plant I have left after the SD's ate them all is a Java fern. Does that matter?

I wouldn't risk it. Plus you will have to deal with algae tank. Go buy yourself a non-phosphate based buffer. It is better on the long run anyhow and I wouldn't risk killing java fern when the instruction say not to use it.
