PH Level

My tank has a PH level of 8 and i was wondering weather or not should i bring it down or is it on the boarder line of being ok and not ok?

It's best not to mess with it. My pH is also 8 out of the tap and my fish do just fine. Make sure you gradually acclimate new additions.

thats pretty common with most tanks. I forgot, what fish do you have in there again? Like i've told other people, I generally don't suggest people adjust their pH in most cases. For instance, my tank runs about 8.0-8.4 and so does the fish stores around here. The same thing was the case when I was in San Diego and LA. 7.0 is generally considered ideal for many fish...but if I change my tank to 7.0 and then I buy a fish from an 8.4 store and throw it in there...the fish could easily become stressed and/or die. I would have to drip acclimate every single fish that goes in. Also, since my tap water is 8.0-8.4, i'd have to adjust the pH every time I add new water so that I do not cause any fluctuations in the tank. Having your pH constantly fluctuate will do more damage to a fish than having high but constant pH. Some fish are a lot more sensitive than others and some will not breed if conditions are not right so sometimes their are benefits to adjusting your pH. Overall though, 8.0 should be ok and I wouldnt worry about it.

Can the ph go above 8.4 or is that the max?

no, the overall scale of known chemicals actually goes from about -5 all the way up to 14. Freshwater test kits test levels just around neutral and usually top off at about 8.4. Saltwater though is usually kept around 8.3 and so a pH test kit for saltwater will often include a higher range.
