If your water is very hard, things like peat and driftwood are going to do very little in terms of lowering your pH. I would get both your pH and hardness tested with liquid test kits. Depending on the outcome we may be able to suggest plants/fish that would work in your water or possibly offer alternative ways to bring down your pH to comfortable levels.
