Oolite sugar sized sand...too fine??

Starting up an African cichlid tank (empty at the moment) but can't decide what substrate to use. Am leaning towards sand, and am thinking the caribsea Aragamax sugar sized (oolite) sand. But am worried it will be too easily stirred up and enter the filter. But I like the idea of the fish being able to sift it easily. Has anyone had any experience with this? Also how deep does it need to be?

sand should be just fine. it will get kicked up easily, but it will settle just as fast.

All the technology for fish care has been around for billions of years.

With normal filtration (not strong currents) this will be fine. Sand is good with cichlids. As for depth, 1-2 inches is plenty as you have no live plants requiring deeper substrates--although you could have some Corkscrew Vallisneria, it grows in the rift lakes and is excellent in hard water. A shallow substrate is fine for this plant. A little group or two with a couple of rocks around the base would be very authentic and add some green.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If youíre going to take it under your wing then youíre responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
