ok, i remember you liked bottom dwellers.

please make sure there is a part of your filter that you do not take out that is submerged like a porous material, a sponge is common here. If you are ment to take out everything in the filter you will have to re-cycle your tank every time you change your filter stuff.

Yeah, I know about that part of the filter etc:)
Indeed, I definately like bottom dwellers and the like...

Now, if one of my dogs didn't chew up my research notepad, we'd be in business! I think most of it is salvageable, just mangled.

I jut did a water change tonight. My current readings are: pH=7.4 Ammonia=.25 Nitrite=0 Nitrate=2.5

My nitrites had spiked, and this was the first day of them going back to 0. The ammonia is showing a trace.
Now I'm back on track with an idea of what I want to slowly stock it with.
I think I'm going to get:
1 Botia angelicus
2 dwarf gouramis(both males)
(possibly a few ghost shrimp)
otocinclus(2?)
cordoras catfish(2?)
possible a school of neon tetras

Still have a lot to think about, but that's the jist....

edited to add: There are tons of diatoms in the tank! They seem to be taking over.

let the diatoms take over if you plan on getting otos, otos love them, my otos cleaned the tank of algae in 5 days. Also otos are very sensitive and picky, some of them wont eat any food you give them and will only eat algae, once there is no algae they might die. Instead of 2 otos and 2 cories, you will be much better with 4 cories as cories like to be in a group

Oh I won't mess with it. I'm glad they're taking over! Won't be for long after I add in those otos:)
I'm getting excited

Well whatever info you have I'd be interested in. I've done research on them, but there still is a lot to learn(always).
Have you had luck with them so far?

yes, my tank has low lighting and is rich in diatoms, even with the otos i see a few specks here and there of diatoms, which is good of course since there too small to see unless you look hard but there are also food in there. I have a link on acclimating an oto (which is very very hard). During my acclimation time one of mine died so just be careful, hold up on the link, i'll get it to you in a second

http://www.planetcatfish.com/shanesw...article_id=178
Start reading from where it says acclimating.

Interesting read. Thanks for the link, it was very helpful!
I was debating about getting them because I had heard so much about the change of death and how it wasn't uncommon.
I feel more confident now.

Okay, my nitrites hit zero on the 7th. On the 8th and 9th(today) they are up to .25
The ammonia is staying at .12
What's going on?? The diatoms in the tank are spreading and taking over. There is even one patch that has turned into what looks to be green algea.
Is my tank messed up or is it something simple, like time to change out the filter cartridge?
Please help!
