have you given it a good clean(no offence ment)
only i know that the surround on my tank, sometimes
catches food, and when it gets damp,it stinks,
also a tank we had a couple of years ago,had sliding glass
and algea use to build and it got that distint "pond"
sort of smell.
if possible leave the lid open to get some fresh air in,
depends what fish you have though.
hth a bit. :)

Few things come to mind...

1. You are feeding the fish too much.
2. Dead plants.
3. Dead fish - rotting.
4. Undergoing nitrogen cycle.

How long has the tank been up?
How big is it and how many fish?
How often do you feed?
How often do you perform water changes?

Depending on what "odor" you have it might actually be normal. All of my tanks have a slight pond smell to them and they should if they are healthy. It does not fill the room but it does often give the room a slight outdoorsy odor.

I'm assuming s/he means it's a foul odor. But yes a mild earthy odor could be the case, and is indeed normal.

It's not until we have a couple questions answered that we can come to a conclusion.

any cloudiness to the water? Often people smell a foul odor when there is a surge of heterotrophic bacteria due to overfeeding or kicking up debris or even just a large water change. USually it smells almost like urine because the by-product of these bacteria is ammonia so you get almost an ammonia smell. The best thing to do if this is the case is to just let your tank do it's thing. Don't do any large water changes unless the water parameters get really bad and cut the feeding down for awhile till it clears up.

Also...adding more carbon to the filter will help remove odors. Carbon should be changed about every month so make sure there is fresh carbon in there and a lot of it.

Something else to check is the seams around the bottom of the tank to see if the odor is coming from there. Any spilled tank water into the seams could decompose there and cause a foul odor.

Also to add that properly maintaining a filter...(rinsing/changing filter pads when needed, cleaning the outside....ect) needs to be done regularly. Waste that is trapped in the filter will start to rot and smell if left untended and will pollute your tank.
