I'm partial to Eheim filters. They don't use carbon and they are quiet.

Carbon is completely useless unless you feel the need to remove stains, tannins, chemicals, etc. I used it only to remove medicines dosed, no more, no less.;)

The disadvantages of carbon with planted tanks is they remove the plant food from the water.
