Hey Y'all ,
I changed the substrate in my tanks to sand and started a new tank as well , I rehomed my rasbora with a male betta , the betta is not showing any aggression no gill turning or fin raiseing but the rasbora seem un comfortable not eating at all for 2 days now , its a 20 were they were in a 30 comm tank .
Also I put my cherry barbs in a smaller tank with my juvie and fry guppys and they arent eating either ...
I used the same water from the 30 to half fill both tanks and used filters I had in the old tanks so bacteria is present the tanks arent cycling i checked the water and the test kit showed all okay numbers . the ph is a little higher than it was but way far from danger just a little higher than old .
I wanted them to have a place to spawn and have eggs but looks like I made a mistake neither fish are eating now .
should I abandon this idea and put them all back in the community tank ? Or will it work itself out in aanother day or so ?

Lol , yeah it looks so much better too . I love the change just not the problems from my rehomeing ideas .
I wanted to get the other species to spawn they are showing all the signs of it . As well as becoming gravid just never get eggs or fry , so I assumed that the eggs were being eaten before they had a chance to hatch out in the community tank , Thats why I decided when I changed the sub and had them all caught that I;d take the oppurtunity to re home them into the diffrent tanks . I've readthat in species only tanks the two species I have were prolific breeders , Although they arent in species only they only have one fish in the tank thats not the same I didnt think it would have this much of a affect on them .
As far as the cherries in with the male guppys in the grow out I didnt think they would be botherd by the guppys . Neither seem to be happy though ...
I really thought that the change would be god for the fish and their health , I researched this over and over and cant explain the issue of not eating .
The rasbora are placed with bettas repeatedly by hobbyist on many sites I researched with good out comes .
The tank is designed for them with hvy plants all big leaf plants .
The cherry barbs as well are in a sand bottom planted with stem plants and rock slabes ..
with a dwarf grass .
I will rehome them both back to the community tank if they dont start eating by tommarow .

Not surprising. Although I have cherry barbs(12) with a male betta and they seem fine I wouldn't recommend doing this if you have another option . In my case they eat together and have been seen racing for a falling food pellet often. I still watch them carefully... zero fin nipping, betta leaves barbs alone. If they rumble, the betta gets pulled and retanked.

Don't know about that.

Keep in mind the water doesn't carry the nitrifying bacteria,
only the filter and other surfaces do.

I doubt it will "work itself out". Fish don't reason things out or make friends, they get along or they don't. All that is happening is they are becoming stressed due to the "threat" and they will not thrive, or worse.
I probably just got lucky with the betta and barbs. Of course it does work the other way as some fish get aggressive at certain times, maturity, spawning etc and they will no longer get along well.

I'd suggest just going back to what was working. For spawning and fry, I think a single species tank would be best, others would know better than I but that just seems to makes sense.

You don't say how long this has been, and that may be the issue. Fish do not like being moved to a different environment. This is a bit hard to explain, but moving most any other animal is usually problem-free. But fish are so tied to the water chemistry and environment that any change can be highly stressful.

It is actually better they not eat, as this will limit the waste entering the system and the water quality will be better. Not feeding them for a couple days wouldn't hurt either.

BTW, when they do spawn, the parents themselves will eat any eggs they find. Unless of course you remove the parents. Some eggs may survive, and then the fry if they can find sufficient microscopic food and have thick plants to hide in may survive. But don't expect large numbers.

Hey sory about the time line ,
I made the move saturday night ,. The rasbora are moving around now and the cherries are eating and moving around well . So everything seems to be okay now thanks everyuone for the input .
I always post before I give the problem time to resolve itself ...incase someone has had the same issue and knows the outcome and can help me or warn me to correct before trouble strikes .
I decided to add the rasbora to the betta tank cause they are the species I see the most being added to betta tanks with good results . I noticed about a week ago that my betta was nippin his own fins and read that a tankmate may help with this problem and it has so theres something .
An as for the cherry barbs shareing the tank with the baby / juvies guppys , well the guppys dont stay in that tank long no more than a couple to 3 weeks at a time so most of the time they will have it to themselves
