the calcite - CaCO3 - will raise GH and KH, Ca2+ for GH and CO3- for KH

the MgO in water will form magnesium hydroxide - Mg(OH)2, which raises pH as some of it dissociates into Mg2+ and OH- ions

That may be helpful, as you (Morkin) need to raise the GH. Have you tested the GH from the well and after the canister?

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]

Not with great accuracy; I tested the water from the canister using a test strip (yeah I know). I am awaiting delivery of my liquid GH / KH kit as the LSF did not stock it. It should be here tomorrow and once it arrives I will test the water both pre and post canister with more accuracy.
I have a well water testing report from a couple of years ago when I purchased the house. This lists the PH as 4.9 but does not mention hardness. The other properties of interest it lists are Iron – 0.4 ppm, Manganese – 0.04 ppm, Nitrate - <200 ppb.

Ok. So I tested the GH and KH today direct feom the well and like you Byron the levels are 0. The canister is adding what little see in the tap water.

I think I am going to opt to fill the tank directly from the well water to gain the lower PH and increase the hardness as recommended.
