My usual reading (for my planted tank) is around 5-10ppm but I'd expect a non-planted tank to have a higher nitrate reading.
I agree...my 29g freshwater stays right around 20ppm Nitrates with plastic plants.
You could possibly think about having some "Purified Water" on hand to add when a level of Nitrates become too high in one of your tanks. Purified Water: This is a type of drinking water that has been treated with processes such as distillation, deionization or reverse osmosis. Basically, this just means that the bacteria and dissolved solids have been removed from the water by some process, making it "purified."
