newbie needs advice

Hey everyone. I'm very new to all of this! I got my son three fish for his birthday and I didn't realise just how complicated goldfish are to look after!!

Anywayz, I have searched and read loads on the forum and I have learned sons birthday presents have triggered a real interest!

I am trying to do my best with cycling the tank. I have been changing the water 50% everyday and its all been going ok until today. I am geting a high reading for ammonia and now I'm panicing!! Do I need to change all of the water asap? If I do this wont it wreck the cycle? I'm only 4 days into starting the cycle so are these readings normal??

I just dont wanna kill the fishes!

I have been using a gravel pump when doing the water changes to try and get some of the poop out of the tank and I've also been adding some of the live bacteria formula to try and get things going!

Despite todays high ammonia reading the fish are looking really healthy. Before I found out that I needed to do all of these water changes etc the fish really were not well (and I feel awful for it!) All of their fins were tucked away and they were hardly moving. They look wonderful now tho :D I wish that the person at the pet store had told me just how much is involved in looking after them, then I would have gone about it all in a much better way!

Any advice would be greatly apprecitaed as I'm having a bit of a panic!

Thanks x

First off Goldfish are really messy fish I would have started with one and after the tank was cycled added the others but hind site is 20/20 and thats what this forum is for.

What kind of filter do you have?

What I would do is keep changing 50% of the water every day. Wait a couple of hours after you change the water and test. Once the ammonia comes down I would go to 50% twice a week. Do that for a couple of weeks then see where you are.

What size tank? Goldfish in general need like, a 20-29 gallon tank each.

As for water changes, I'd try doing something in the range of 25-30% first, otherwise you risk shocking the fish. Right now you're about where the ammonia would probably spike so just stay patient and calm.

This is the song that never ends...
