New Tank...Stocking??

Just got a 20 gallon high from a friend for free. I'm soooo excited to get it set up. Can't wait. Anyway I see these posts all the time so here's mine. What do you guys think I should stock it with? I'm not sure what I wanna do yet.

There are many options for a 20 gallon, but you will want to stay with small fish that stay small, and be very careful about adding female live bearing fishes so as not to over populate your tank quickly.

What kind of environment do you wish? Cold water or tropical? Live plants? What type of equipment are you going to be using? Those things will help to determine what type of fish will best thrive in your tank. If you can paint us a mental image of what you'd like to see in this tank, then maybe we can narrow things down and make some appropriate suggestions.

Would also be helpful to know what water parameters you have?
It will be the easiest for you to pick fish that get along in the type water (pH & harness) you have at home, let's say you have super hard water and buy neon's it would kill them fairly quick and that would not be a nice start for any of you
There's test kits available for instance from API at your local pet store.
Also (since I don't know if you're new to the hobby or not) a tank needs to be properly cycled first to ensure you have no nitrite and nitrate left (which is going to rise during cycling and then fall back down to a normal level once done) adding fish before this process is completed more often then not results in dead fish.'

Dwarf cichlids are awesome. I keep a trio of Mikrogeophagus altispinosus and enjoy them. I like Apistogramma cacatuoides and Pelvicachromis pulchers too.

If you don't stand up for something you'll fall for anything...

With dwarf cichlids you would want a heavily planted tank & soft water environment for them to thrive. Also keep in mind that dwarf cichlids typically need much higher temps than other tropicals... which will make some difference when seeking out appropriate tank mates.
