Nice! What gravel have you used there doesn't look like normal gravel on the pic?!

Thats what I was thinking when I noticed it in the LPS.....
not the normal color but it is gravel...
It looks alot like crushed coral but a tad lighter...
I have been trying new substrates so that all my
tanks are not the same..... The next tank will
have the Ultra Reef Sand. Pure White.....
only thing I have heard that it gets up in the impeller
of some filters..... so I am a little hesitant.

Couldn't really say I ever seen this color gravel before; looks very nice!

I hear ya, I set up each tank in a different way too.

I hadn't had exp with the "Ultra Reef" Sand...but regular fine sand's of different kinds some being more like powdery fine....Hadn't had no problem; but that said I could see how it may be a problem with some sands if you have a VERY high end filter on it that pushes a lot water through each hrs and kicks up the sand (and then in return the kicked up sand does get sucked in)...so I'd just carefully evaluate before doing this what size tank you have and what filter you have on there.

I am going to set up two more tanks...
one being a 30 gallon
and the other a 2.5 gallon for babies....
since having the baby flowerhorns and noticing
that they get in between the bigger rock ( gravel )
I thought it would be better for the babies to have some
smooth sand ..... less likely for them to get stuck in .. lol
and plus they can eat off the bottom better that way too.
just my thoughts... maybe you can add to the insight.

What you're planning on housing in the 30g?

The 2.5g baby tank I'd def stock with a sponge filter; better for the babies and works wonderful with sand. 30 g's I had set up with sponges before (heavy planted) but that said; that would also depend on what stock you plan there. What also worked well for me with the fine sand and smaller tank was internal filters; so you have the "kick" to clean and room for bio matter in the filter (like a canister) but it doesn't disturb the sand in the way the HOB would.

makes alot of since...
I will actually put in a sponge filter for the 2.5
I actually was leaning towards both for the 30 gallon
I need a bigger tank to hold all the baby Cichlids till they
mature either for selling or for other tanks of mine...
but for the most part Cichlids....will be in the 30 gallon.

Yea then I'd pers not go with a sponge on the 30g; I'd get a good internal filter (so it won't kick up your sand like that); either a eheim (the powerball I think its called without research now) or one of the cascade's small models.

Well I have a used Marineland 170 with bio wheel on it....
I was thinking of using that filter with a Circle Sponge filter
in the corner....
that way I get best of both moving water and then
the filtration of the sponge.
I dont know its just a thought so far...

Test it...see how that works on the sand for you (didn't for me, but that doesn't mean it may not work for you).
