Thank you, now I have a better understanding those different types of filtration. But now I have some more questions. I have heard of people siliconing their rocks together in their tanks, is this okay to do or do the chemicals for the silicone affect the fish? I would like to fill my tank so that I have most of the levels of the tank occupied by fish, does my list seem sufficient for this purpose or do I need to revise a little? Also, if I did not go with the 75 and went with a 55 would this be too many fish for the tank?

No, so long as the silicone you get is aquarium silicone it won't harm you fish at all. It's whats holding together many of the decorations in my tank. I would strongly advise you to take the 75. The 55 is narrow and will be a real pain to build enough rockwork to keep the cichlids happy and let them have room to swim. It's up to you but as someone who owns a 55 the lack of depth is brutal when it comes to trying to decorate the tank.

+1 for the 75 gal. You will kick yourself for not going with the largest tank you can . For ease of service I like the emperor 400 HOB filters. I use an emperor400 and a emperor280 on 80 gal discus tank. The biowheels provide a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize and the extra media cartridge that comes with both allows you to customize your filtration. Add to that the price is reasonable and parts are easily found and in my view, it is hard to beat. Blue Acara, Severums, and Keyhole cichlids are a few of my favorites and may be something you might consider.GOOD LUCK! :D

The most important medication in your fish medicine cabinet is.. Clean water.

I'm a fan of the biowheel HOBs myself. And if you really want to customize filtration then Fosters & Smith makes clamshell frames for them that will let you put what you want in them:
