Well, I am gonna start the process of Cleaning the 55 gal tank here shortly. boy i think that's gonna be a long task to complete, but once I get it cleaned up, gonna check it for leaks and all that fun stuff...It's gonna be a slow steady process but I'll get it done.

Well, cleaning has been fun. I basically threw away everything that came with the tank. The Heater was an ancient glass heater that appeared cracked. the Filter...well we just won't go there. It also had an underground filter setup, that wasn't pretty. I threw it out, along with the rock it had in it.

I'm about to throw out both hood Lights included with the tank as well. One of them the plug was corroded as well as the switch wouldn't pop in and out, therefore I couldn't shut that light off, The other one seems ok. However if I get 1 new light, I might as well get them both, right? lol And the glass for under the lights...Ugh Calcium deposits about a quarter inch thick, that would be alot of work.

So, all that Aside, I put 5 gallons worth of water in it, and it's held that. There is a crack in it that had been sealed, so I'm hoping that it stays sealed.

As for the hood lights...
If the actual hood that contains everything is still in good condition and matches the decor of the rest of the tank, you could just gut out all the electrical stuff and replace it with an AH Supply (Compact Fluorescent Lighting Kits) lighting kit.

I did this with the crappy hood light that came with my 30-gal-all-in-one kit from Petco when I decided I wanted to start planting my tank. I'm very pleased with the result.

The AH supply kit won't fix your crappy switch problem, but you can probably fudge something together. Although I haven't flipped the switch on my hood in over a year. I plug it into a vacation timer and give my fish a consistent (though quite sudden) transition between night and day.

They sort of go with it....but I just don't want the hassle of cleaning those as well...the tank was bad enough. No big deal to go get new hoods...I'd rather buy something I know will work, then risk something that won't.

Well, I've been waiting to get some funds to actually get my 55 gal tank up and running, and it seems as though I've finally got the funds together, so I'm going through finding what all I need to get for my tetra tank. Looking at hoods now, and geeze they're expensive, anyone have any reccomendations for them?

It depends on how much you want to spend for the fixture and for bulb replacement. Also on whether or not you'll have live plants. Making a hood or just using a shop light is the cheapest route. I just went through this with my 55gal. I wanted plants so I bought a glass hood with a triple t8 bulb setup.
