new sponge filter with strange odor

Bought a sponge filter sold on ebay, which was shipped from China. It was cheap and just wanted to try it with my bubbler. However, I noticed that the product has a strange smell - kind of plastic-like but not quite. Has anyone used these filters? Is the odor safe for fish? How will I make it go before I put it in the tank? Thanks.

I would let it sit for a few days and see if the smell is still there, could just be from the long journey shipping it.

If the smell is still there, soak it in a vinegar solution and let it air dry completely. Rinse it several times and then see if the smell is still there.
If the smell persists then I would not use at all.

10g Fry / Hospital / QT tank (as needed)

75g Saltwater Reef, Ocellaris Clownfish, Lyretail Antias (baby), Lemon damsel, Longtail Fairy Wrasse, purple dottyback, snails, crabs and a few LPS corals.

220g Still sitting empty (come on Lottery I need the numbers to come up!)
