Hi, I'm going to be buying quite a small tank for freshwater fish within the week, I'm aware of the 1-2 week cycle period, and am now thinking about what fish to put in my tank. The tank is going to be about, w x d x h: 60cm x 23cm x 30cm. I was thinking about goldfish but after a visit to the pet shop I am now thinking about guppies and tetra, as well as a couple of fish that will help clean the gravel and sides of the tank. Does anyone have any recommendations? How many guppies and tetra would be suitable (I'm hoping to breed guppies in the future)? Are there any bigger, friendly, fish that could join that community?

Thanks for your help.

guppies and tetras is always a good colorful way to go. And don't worry, if you get a male and a female guppy, there will be babies! As fas as for bottom cleaners a couple of cories would be good, avoid plecos as most get quite large. maybe a couple of snails for algea cleaning.

Guppies and tetras for a 10 gallon, I would go with a max of 5 guppies and 8 tetras and MAYBE 2 of the smaller cories. Without the cories, maybe 6-8 tetras, (the smaller ones) and maybe 6-7 guppies. The guppies will over run the tank in less than 4 months so make sure you have a resource to get rid of the babies.

yeah, a normal cycle period is usually about a month but can be sped up using supplements. Keep in mind that if you are not doing goldfish, a heater would be strongly suggested to keep a stable temperature of about 78-82F in your tank. Pretty much everything besides goldfish is accustomed to tropical temperatures.
