I would just like to add that if you do get an ADF (African Dwarf frog) get more than one as they do enjoy eachother's company. I started with one and he just hid all the time. I added another and they both are much happier and come out and explore more.

I also have 6 Harlies in a planted 10 gallon along with the 2 ADFs and a mystery snail. It's a nice little tank.

150 Gallon - Mostly American Cichlids
135 Gallon - Angelfish Community
75 Gallon - Odd couple (Polleni/Angelfish)
55 Gallon - African tank
20 Gallon Long - QT
10 Gallon - Empty

I personally like bettas but as has been said they can be hard to keep with very small fish or nippy fish. I do keep some with platties but in larger tanks so there is room for them to move around. For a small setup, I would favor smaller fish like endlers. They will do well with most peaceful fish such as corydoras but might not survive a betta. They are very active and are easy to care for.
