New Fish aquarium lover

I just started a Frish water 55 gallon tank that is been up and running for about a 3 weeks looking to add some Semi aggressive fish. I have been looking around and noticed some Silver tip Barbs, Bala Sharks, and Convict Black. and some Kissing fish. Not all of them I want in my tank but are the compatable?

I never had a tank before and I think that I will love it? Any suggestions, Thank you

Welcome to FishForum!

Silver tip Barbs- not sure what you're talking about here? I'm aware of a silver tip tetra, but those are community fish

Bala Sharks- they get to be 16", too large for a 55 gallon, check out

Black Convict Cichlid- definitely doable, although be forewarned, they breed like rabbits

Kissing fish- I assume you mean Kissing Gourami? They are probably too delicate for a semi-aggressive tank.

Of all the fish you mentioned, I think convict cichlids would be the most suitable for your tank. You could also look at some of the other "sharks" that are smaller, like Red Tail Black Sharks or Rainbow Sharks. As for barbs, Tiger Barbs are your best bet for a semi-aggressive.

You could also do an oddball tank with something like a Birchir.

Keep in mind the convicts will be more than "semi-aggressive" once they start breeding. They will also get big enough to eat small community fish. A pair would do nicely in a 55g tank, but their size and temperament will limit your other stocking options.

The kissing gouramis are somewhat hard fish to keep in a community setup. They can easily be picked on by other fish, and their "kissing" behavior can stress other fish.

You've never seen this before? They'll try to "kiss" other fish. Other fish don't like it too much. Also, they chase after and bother fish much bigger than themselves and can get beat up by meaner fish (like convicts).

Good luck.

Unfortunately, that Bala is going to get way too large for your tank.

I'd also recommend adding more barbs as they are schooling fish.

Did you cycle your tank before adding these fish?
