New fish

How long do you wait to feed your fish after you add them to your tank? I have heard as long as 24 hours... what does everyone do? I bought flakes and frozen bloodworms today.

I've read that its best not to feed for 24 hours, feed your current fish (if any) before adding the new ones in. Fish can go days and I think weeks without food, so don't worry!
Its also recommended to shut off the lights and leave them off for a few hours, or until next on time... less stressful to the fish!

When I introduce new fish to an established aquarium it will usually be in the afternoon. I feed every morning, so the tank would be fed as usual the following morning. For those tanks that also get occasional evening feedings, I would not do so the day of new fish, but wait for the next.

I have never bothered over lights; tanks are heavily planted (security for new fish if needed), lights are on timers and it is too much fuss to mess with them. When possible, I would introduce new fish well before the lights go out, 3 or more hours, so they have some chance of assessing the environment and tankmates before darkness. Except for some catfish, fish are inactive in total darkness.

The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. [unknown source]

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
