Hi all, I got myself A 100ltr tank and am loving it! bought 2 platys, 2 guppies, 2 penguin tetras and 2 cardinals to kick start. Been running tank now 3 wks, water was tested at aquatic centre yesterday and all was good.

This morning when doing water change, I found Platy fry in filter! I think I know from which one due to white protruding area by abdominal fins, My question is, all day both (females) have pooped non stop, literally, and poop is starting to look clear particular the one who didn't give birth. I have not over fed giving just one disc of food per fish per day. Is this normal???!!!

I am reading massively conflicting stories!!! Anyone with any knowledge or expertise in this, any advice gratefully received!!!! :)
Thanks in advance!

If you don't get an answer to this in a few days, find your way over to the Bettafish side of the forum (the sister site) and ask in the "Other Fish" section. The recent forum revamp has slowed some of the responses. There are just more members over there, many of whom are quite knowledgeable about community tropicals.

One disc of food per fish?
Could you explain that a bit more?
I had one Platy. It would produce a disturbingly long poop string that would hang on for quite a while. Not sure if it was the type of food that caused it to be so sturdy that it did not break off quickly. I feed several types of food. But it did not seem to be any health problem. It just happened now and then. It did seem to happen a lot in the first while that I had him. Maybe the change in diet, new tank. Was less often after that.

I also question 'one disc of food' per day.

Many lower quality foods use fishmeal and while fishmeal isn't all that bad, it keeps poor company in the making of fish food. Fishmeal based foods require a copious amount of starch as a binder. Rice, oats, wheat, gluten...Check your ingredients on the label and you may find these listed first as the primary ingredients. But fish can't process these starch binders so they pass through as waste...a lot of waste.
A better choice is higher quality foods that use fresh fish instead of fishmeal with less binders....like Omega One and Almost Natural to name a couple.
I know that way back when I switched to higher quality foods, fish waste decreased.
