New 90 gallon aquarium!

My dad's friend's brother had a terrarium. It was a 90 gallon tank, and he had to get rid of it today. He had about $1000 invested in it, and he gave everything to us! There's rocks, driftwood, timers, a stand, and a bunch of terrarium stuff. So now we're waiting until tomorrow to put a couple of jacks under the floor to support the weight, and then we'll fill it up. The only things I have to buy are a filter (he had a powerhead, but I have no experience with powerheads. Only power filters.) and a top. He had a light and a top, but I'm not sure how well his top would come off. There's a main wooden top, and a smaller glass top, so I'm a little confused about how that works. The tank is 4 feet 1 inch by 18 inches by 2 feet. Any suggestions on what to put in it?

On a side note, my angelfish have spawned a second time, and my snail somehow climbed out of the tank and across our dining room, to have its body stepped on by my little sister. (Guess what that reaction was... )

RIP fire eel
why did you think it was a good idea to keep going over the top of the tank
when you realized you couldn't breathe outside water?

I know it's going to be an aquarium, not a terrarium. idk what I'll put in it. It's big enough for black ghost knifes, like I had before, but it's also big enough for other fish. With all the different things he had, I could make just about any biotope aquarium, or a community tank, or a species tank. He had told my dad that the tank was 100 gallons, then when we got there he said it was 150. I was excited no matter how big it was, but I knew it had to hold a lot of water, because that glass is thick! I measured, and looked online to find out that there are ~231 cubic inches in a gallon, so there's somewhere between 81 (excluding glass and some space) and 91 (including glass and plastic covers on top and bottom) gallons. Since 90 is the closest widely made size, that's what I'm saying it is.

2 things

hi, im "Freddy"'s sister and i have two things to say.

number 1. just because im his little sis doesn't mean im 5. im actually 13. and that was so not my reaction! i thought it was my 9 yr old sister's shell from her collection, so i kind of just left it where it was and backed away slowly...

number 2. congrats bro on ur new aquarium. its huge. PLEASE get more black ghost knife fish! i like them a lot and i was sad when you sold ur old ones. hope ur cycling works out well and i hope lots of ur baby angelfish survive!!

ignore her. She has nothing fish-related to contribute to the forum.

Does anyone have any experience with purple spaghetti eels? They're really rare, and my lfs might be able to special order some. I have to call back later to find out.
I got back from the store today, and there were a bunch of wigglers on the filter tube. The angelfish must have spawned a day earlier than I thought. Which means that I have less time to get brine shrimp eggs than I thought. My lfs won't have any until Tuesday. Will the wigglers be ok for 3-4 more days?

Freddy, what day was their first spawn? You won't see wigglers until Day 3. Did you not see the eggs the first 2 days? Free swimming takes one week. I am currently on Day 5! I can see little eyes of the fry and they are looking more like fish today than tadpole wigglers. If your LFS gets the brine shrimp eggs on Tuesday you might still be okay. IF you get them start right away, you'll have baby brine shrip by Thursday.

I thought I knew the day they spawned, but they must have spawned late the afternoon before I noticed the eggs. The parents are now fighting over whether to move the eggs from the plant they're on right now on to the spawning slate, or to leave them where they are. One moves the eggs, and the other immediately sucks them up and spits them back with the rest of the eggs.

For my 90 gal, I've decided on a sand substrate. Sand is easy to clean, and is okay for just about all fish. It will be okay for any eels I might put in the tank. We're going to get sand soon, when this stupid rain stops. We decided to move the aquarium to the OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM... after I spent a whole day in about 10 square feet of space, putting in jacks in the basement where we thought the aquarium was going to go. Fortunately, there's a steel beam there, so no more jacks! I have to go now and get my dad to take me before he goes to sleep until my little brother's confirmation party, which will take up the rest of the day.

And then... summer is over... and I have to go back to school tomorrow. So I have to make the last 9 hours of summer be worth every second!
