What a great forum! Wondering if anyone could help a noob?
OK, I'm setting up a 29 gallon tank, brand new. This is what I've done so far. I'm hoping some experienced people might be able to comment on anything I'm missing or need to do?
It's a 29 gallon glass tank from Petco, side-hanging charcoal filter rated for up to 30 gallons, small submerged heater set to 72F, marbles and artificial plants on the bottom. I filled it with water, added anti-chlorine/anti-chloramine tablets, and then added 1/8 tsp of a good bacteria starter. Let it run for a couple of hours, checked the PH with a strip (it came out exactly in the middle of the normal range), then added 5 very small Tiger Barbs.
The barbs seem okay, they are swimming everywhere in a cute little pack. I'm feeding them only once per day. But after sitting overnight, the water is a little cloudy.
I put the tank on a heavy wood dresser, and just noticed this morning that the four corners of the metal frame around the tank are solid / flat on the dresser, but in the middle, there is a very shallow bow in the dresser wood . . . you can slide a piece of paper into it, but not a credit card. Is that anything to worry about? I'd hate to have 30 gallons of water and injured fish flying everywhere if the tank cracks . . . .
