New 10 gallon need sticking ideas!

i got a new 10 gallon off of craigs list. the person sold it to me WITH--

1 old whisper 20-40 (it was all crusted with crud and motor was blown)
1 algae brush and scraper
a perfecto hood and light setup
gravel (the epoxy coating was extremely worn off)
and a bunch of other stuff

FOR 5 BUX!!!!!!!!!!!

but iam racking my brain on stocking it! any good ideas! i dont want guppies or really small fish. it doesnt have any gravel in it, i just used some blue craft marble things instead (dont really have the cash for gravel).

the tank is cycling right now. i had my old whisper bio foam in my biowheel filter in case of this.

i would suggest a school of rummynose tetras and either cories or kuhli loaches, :) (if cories would be ok with the substrate you have). if rummynoses are too small you could get pencil fish, or dwarf gourami maybe. (celebes and threadfin rainbowfish are nice too but on the small side). oh hachetfish are nice too. especially the marbled ones.

oooh perhaps a single dwarf gourami (so you dont have fights), 6 pygmy cories and a mystery snail :D

yes, if you got the dwarf gourami i would only get one. another thing you could add would be some cool shrimp! what do you think of these ideas? are you looking for something else?

well, cories would be fine, but iam gunna have more of those in my 29 gallon.

i was thinking shrimp, snails and something for "centerpiece fish". maybe a dwarf gourami. my lfs doesnt have kuhli loaches.

i dunno really what i'd like. but with everyones help i can figure something out! someone on Aquaria central was talkin about 2 dwarf puffers.

oh i forgot, i cleaned out the whisper 20-40 filter nf it runs perfectly! turns out the impeller was so crusted with crap that it wasnt turning.

I'd go for a puffer fish. There are a few different freshwater ones that stay pretty small, and they're definitely a centerpiece fish- very interesting. You could go for 1 male and 2 female dwarf puffers (aka pea puffers), or something like a red eye puffer. My friend kept 3 red eye puffers in a 30G heavily planted tank and it didn't work out. The two females were systematically harassed and killed by the male. Maybe 2 females would work in a 10 gallon? The males are a lot more brightly colored though, so if you went the Red-Eye route I'd just get one male.

i'd have to drive an hour and pay out the wazoo for fw puffers. i asked one place and they are selling em for 15 bux each. dont really have that kind of cash.

Really? Dwarf puffers run a pretty standard $5-6 at most places. Sounds like you're getting ripped off!

for a center piece fish i would do either a dwarf puffer or a gourami. oh as a center piece you could also get a flagfish! they are gorgous and dont get overly big. they also dont need a lot of swimming space. they like slow and steady water though so you would have to make sure that your filter doesnt move the water too fast.

by flagfish you mean something like a betta right? and yea with the flow adjuster on the whisper 20-40 i can have it move alittle slower.

i had to move my pleco into the 10 for now (not done cycling but), my dempsey has been stressing him out alot and his color was fading alittle. plus i think my j.d. was eating the algae wafers and nudging sarge (pleco) away from pieces of cucumber i add every 2-3 days, so on top of the stress i think it was also malnutrition as well.
