new 10 gallon - looking to add but overstocked?

hi all
got a 10 gallon that i've cycled and have 3 black skirt tetras and 3 serpae tetras in there. I think after reading that I prob should have gotten one of just one of the species but that is what salesperson at the pet store recommended.

question is that I am looking to add some bottom feeders such as a corys but think the tank might be overstocked then. know that i should get at least 3 corys but will that overload the tank? i have a penguin 100 biowheel filter.

any suggestions would be appreciated
thnks

Most likely, yes you are at the limit.

The general rule of thumb that is thrown around is 1" per gallon. That's only a ballpark though, as some fish produce more waste than others at the same size. Live plants also can shift the balance as they act like natural filters.

The Serpae Tetra get to be ~1.5" each
The Black Skirt Tetra get to be ~2.5" each

That puts you at ~12" which is over the 'ballpark' 10". Cory's, depending on the species, are around 2.5" each and another 7.5" of fish would really overstock your tank.

You could always upgrade to a 29 gallon ;)

got it thanks, yeah figured i was overstocked but was hoping i could add some bottom feeders to add variety. i added some ghost shrimp but the fish thought they were a nice snack so that didn't work out

Is your aquarium planted? I've found that a planted aquarium is a happy aquarium!

Maybe you could try a slightly larger shrimp species. It would definitely be nice to have a bottom feeder in that tank...

not to call you out but I generally find that rule false, although I still think you might be over stocked a tid bit due to space not waste. Most tetras have a very low biological impact on a fish tank. Also most petstores tell you what you they think will make them a sale. Unless it is a reputable pet store or a specialist fish store which I would be more inclined to believe but always research before you buy.

Go to your desired section, ex; cichlids and then when you see all of other people threads, look at the top far left and you should see 'post new thread'

Where you want to post. Like cichlids or characins or things like that. It isn't called 'desired section'
