Neon Tetras not doing well!!!

Hi everybody,

I'm pretty new to fish keeping and just set up my first 10 gallon tank about a month ago. I have 2 MM platys and 1 bottom feeder which are all doing well. However my 3 neon tetras which I've added about a week ago seem to be stressed and just hover behind one of the decorations and really don't do much. I've noticed that they seem to become a little more active once I turn the hood lamp off. I've read that tetras should be kept in groups of 5 or more however the pet store would not sell me more than 3 since my 10 gallon tank has reached it's limit of fish. Could this be the reason they are hiding out most of the day or could there be anything else wrong with them? I've had my water levels tested at the pet store twice since then and both reading were good.
Any suggestions?

1. Find a new fish store. While they're advice may be correct in a way they should also know neons need more than 3 to feel comfortable plus have a small bioload so adding 4-6 more won't hurt. Plus any store that says you can't buy something is bad imo.

2. Buy more tetras. I'd say atleast 4 but a few more won't hurt. You're correct that tetras and many other fish enjoy being in groups so the more the merrier pretty much. You do have to take your tank size into consideration though.

Also do you have any plants or anything to make them feel more comfortable? A open tank with few things in it could make them feel exposed more than they already do being in a small group. Also how bright is the light you have on the tank? that could have something to do with it.
