Well...it isn't the cheapest, but crushed shells, limestone and all that effectively raises ph and hardness, and it's real easy to do. I totally understand your cheapness. After looking long and hard, I have found a 75 Gallon with a stand for one hundred dollars. Simple you say? Well...how about: Australasian Blue-eyes (Rainbowfish)

here is my plan for my 29 gallon, group of corys, tiger barbs and center piece fish like a krib or some smaller cichlid that wont get bullied by the tigers.

another idea is putting in 2 dwarf gouramis but if i do that, ill have to change my set up probably, they just have awesome colors, so im am leaning towards the dwarfs
