Need a little advice on my bad start

Hi, I just signed up really interested in finding out what advice I might get on my current situation.

I have successfully kept planted tanks years ago and now I've started again with a 75gallon tank. I feel confident I know what I'm doing. But you wouldn't think so judging from where and under what circumstances I got my first fish for this tank.

The first fish I put in there are 2 gouramis from a popular pet store chain. I noticed many other dead fish in the tanks that day, but I went for it anyway. I knew I was trying my luck. Shouldn't have done it. Stupid stupid stupid.

This was about 2-3 weeks ago and i have since put in a handful of plants, tested the water a few times (everything fine). And I added 6 very small tiger barbs and one snail from a repudable aquarium shop this time.

Today, not only are my plants dying (they arrived in the mail with a leg in the grave already), but one of the two gourami looks sick to me. Pale splotches around the head, a single white speck on a gill which looks very much like ick.

So I decided to just stop right here, not add anything else at all, keep testing the water, and see what happens.

I'm afraid this fish might make everything else in the tank sick. I have no idea what's going on with it. It is acting healthy, but it does not look healthy.

What would any of you advise me right now?

As I see it, I have two choices. 1) Treat the tank with something killing everything in it but the fish 2) do nothing.

thanks!

75 gallon tank
220 watts of light
eco-complete substrate
ammonia - 0ppm
nitrite - 0ppm
nitrate - 0ppm
Other tests (ph, kh, gh, phosphate) - kits have been ordered (so I have no test results for these yet)

is there any way you could isolate the sick fish? it might already be too late but if it isn't, you should probably remove it in case the other fish catch it. maybe wait a few days and see if the supposed 'ich' spreads...if it does i guess the only thing to do is treat the whole tank. ugh dont you hate it when something like this happens? i had a similar experience recently setting up a new tank and now only have one fish left

i'm afraid that it might be too late. the 2nd gourami has a speck that I'm not convinced yet is ick. We'll see.

I do have a 2nd tank I started at the same time. 24 gallon. I think once this mess is looking up, I will put fish in the smaller tank for a period of time before transfering them to the larger tank where they could do more damage.

that's a good idea. it sounds like you have an ick problem...it's pretty easy to treat if you're quick. just to make sure though, i'd wait a day or two in case it is something else. definitely dont add any new fish to a tank with sick fish in it...

If--and I say if--this is really ich, then the entire tank must be treated; removing the fish is useless. Here's a link to info from the disease thread that will explain the ich cycle:

However, it may not be ich. Can you post a clear photo of the fish with the "spot"?

Unless the problem can be accurately identified, treatment may be even worse, and the fish are likely under stress and adding medications and chemicals will increase that stress, and if they do no good even more stress.

well so far so good. in 4 days the one spot has turned into one and a half. and the splotches haven't changed. the gourami still looks healthy. If this was ich, wouldn't hit have spread all over the place by now?

probably. it could be fungus...can you get a picture?
also what temperature is the tank?
from my experience both ich and fungus spread really fast, but it's just another option.
