NEED IDEAS! help me out?

Hey everyone,

So I've been doing aquariums for a long time. (About 10 years) Last year, I moved and was not allowed aquariums, although i now have one!!! I'm excited to get my tank goin, yet I don't know what to stock it with. I've kept pretty much everything. From breeding guppies and platys, to keeping Dovii Cichlids in 300 gallons, to breeding multiple species of killis. I have come to a dilemma on this tank.

It's a 35 hex. I was gonna do African Peacock Cichlids orginally, but thought I'd open it up for suggestions as well. I'm gonna be running an undergravel filter on it, and am not gonna buy super high power lighting, the T5 on it now lights it fine.

So shoot me some ideas!

Welcome to TFK, maximoaquatica! I'm afraid I'm useless on stocking ideas for Hex style tanks. Little floor space as far as real estate and tall. Someone else will have ideas, they'll come along soon.

If you don't stand up for something you'll fall for anything...

Hello maximoaquatica and welcome to the forum ,

My first tank setup was a 45 gal. hex. Based on some less than helpful advice from the fish store, i stocked it with rainbows, tetras, cories, and a common pleco.

BAD idea.

All of these fish needed swimming length - not 12" at a whack. And the pleco fouled up the tank so badly that I couldn't keep nitrates under 60 with weekly water changes of 1/3. Everyone eventually got rehoused to a 75 gallon long (except Mr. Pleco who was rehomed) and they are doing so much better.

The best bet for a hex. are angelfish who actually do well with tall tanks bc of their body shape. I still have the 45 gallon and when I set it up again, that's what will go in it.

If you don't like the angel idea, I've seen some pretty gorgeous salt water rock/reef setups in hexes at the fish stores but with one or two fish only.

Let us know what you decide and good luck in the meantime.

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

The 35 hex is too small of a footprint for Peacocks. As Romad suggested a couple of Angels would do well. Or you could do a couple schools of smaller schooling fish such as neons and rummynose with maybe a pair of Bolivian Rams .

150 Gallon - Mostly American Cichlids
135 Gallon - Angelfish Community
75 Gallon - Odd couple (Polleni/Angelfish)
55 Gallon - African tank
20 Gallon Long - QT
10 Gallon - Empty

yeah the hex makes a nice focal point but like aunt said there is little floor space..some nice loaches or corydoras on the bottom, maybe a flying fox or rainbow shark, larger tetras or less rambunctios barbs for the mid level, and an anabantid for the top.....but then again alaunacaras or peacocks usualy a nice show stopper...just a suggestion..adios....

I agree with the Angels. I wouldn't put a Rainbow Shark in though as they seem to need more floor space. I think for a Rainbow the profile say minimum of 4 foot long tank. I am adding this mostly because my shark can be crabby to his friends and I think the thing saving us is he has a lot of floor space. I know that some are nicer then others but I wouldn't want someone to take a chance if there are other options. I also agree that a planted tank with a school of neons would be quite lovely.
