Hi all,

I just scored a sweet deal on CL. 75 gallon long with wooden stand for $250. Came with everything but the filter is crap. They were using an Aqua-Tech 30-60. I'm thinking of going with a canister filter but know absolutely squat about them.

From what I've read on this forum, lots of people are fans of Eheim (sp?). So, who is a fan of the canister and what do I need to know (pros & cons)?

Thanks :)

That size tank def a Eheim; they're super good quality last forever, do the job right w/out hick ups; I love them and will never put anything but Eheim on my larger tanks :) For your tank I'd get something like the Professional 2 or 3 series there from Eheim.

You gotta check the chain pet stores thou; when I bought one last Nov the very same Model (2213) was half the price online then IN store....(which makes a difference if you maintain several tanks like I do lol).

Thanks Angel. I'll do some research on those series and model number that you gave me.

I have plenty of time to get a good deal since I can't set this tank up until we move.

Another thing I forgot to mention which is to be watched as well: Eheim if you break any part while you're cleaning the filter or do lord knows what...You'll ALWAYS get replacement parts and won't have the issue about needing a whole new filter cause 1 lil piece got broken. That's another reason I like them; like I said they last forever...but sometimes humans shorten the lifetime of things :)

There is more to life than Eheim. Just so it's not always a one sided view I will chime in a recommendation for Rena Filstar. When people ask I recommend both because of everything I've read, these two are the least complained about. Rena I have and it's working brilliantly. Eheim I know only from what I've read from others.

Yea but you have no years & years of exp to report there on your Rena :)
Edit...sorry but I had to come back at Eric one day :)

I just ordered the Marineland Magnum 350 Filter Deluxe edition......I've read all the stuff about all the filters...I really like the Eheim 2217, I really like the Rena XP3....I've read alot of great things about all of them.

I've always liked Marineland products and I just ordered it off of Drs Foster and Smith. The price was right too!

Everyone is going to have their opinions on Canisters, I really cant say I've read anything bad about the eheim or the Rena. For me it was price and functionality. You'll find one you finally like and feel comfortable with...it took me about a week to finally decide, but I did.

Call me old fashioned, I run the Emperor 280 and 400 models by Marineland on all but hospital /quarantine tank and have for years. I run two Emperor 400's on 80 gal as well as 75 gal. Reliable,(years) inexpensive, parts are easily found.
With that said,, I am purchasing my first canister that will be for 75 gal planted tank I am planning for spring when weather and plant selection are more favorable. It will be the Eheim 2217. Should be plenty for 75 gal. plants,or no plants.

Are you sure it's not 80 gallons? My 75 gal is approx 19 1/2 inches tall from bottom of trim to top of trim along edge of tank. Might be even better deal than you think!:)

I thought of my 55g when I seen the picture...I'd just measure & calculate the volume.

I drove out for this 'awesome' 55g before....well turns out on site someone had a measuring issue and it was a 20 long...big difference:lol:

Thanks folks. It's def. a 75 gallon. I just measured it and it's 48 x 20 x 19.

LisaC, I would gladly pay someone $11 multiplied by 5 or 6 to come and clean it for me first
