hi and welcome to the forums! I just began buying plant and one thing I noticed is that some petstores barely take care of aquatic plants. I would google aquarium stores form where you live and try some places. there are alot of plant that are really easy to take care of. And if you have the option of ordering plants online you can save a lot of money buying your plants online a lot of people here use aquariumplants.com or sweetaquatics.com

Read more: Hello everyone I am a beginner and I need your help! :)

I asked someone how they ship them and they said They ship them either with a little bit of water or wrapped in moist paper towels in plastic bags. The person I asked said that they always arrive in good condition and that you can save lots of money by ordering a group of plants.

you should check it out!

I concur with leogtr. If you do buy in stores, make sure they are true aquatic plants. Chain stores (but others too0 frequently sell terrestrial plants as aquarium plants and this is bad.

As for suggesting plants, some more info on your setup will help us to do this. What light (be specific), what substrate, and what fertilizers do you use?

Byron.

I have bought a few plants from PetSmart, and have found them to be pretty hit and miss. I much prefer scouring the online classifieds in my city. It's WAAAAAAAY less expensive, and the plants are already acclimated to your water conditions and haven't gone through the stress of shipping. For the 4-5 plants I've bought from PetSmart, I probably spent a total of $20-30. For $5, I planted the whole rest of my tank and have gotten a free ice cream pail in the process.

Byron is totally right! I was a fool for not researching what I was buying. All the plants I bought at petsmart were not aquatic plants... Thanks to this forum releaized it before they were rotting in my tank.

The only aquatic plant I was able to buy there was Anarchis. So far its growing pretty well in my tank. I drove 30 miles to go to the only freshwater fish store in the orlando metro area.. (hard to believe for a big city) However if I was doing salt water there are 101 places to go....

From there I bought 2 java fern and 2 anubus. all of them I am told are pretty hardy plants and I have had them for 2 weeks and they are green as ever. My java fern also started to produce little versions on the leafs.

I just wish I knew I was doing it right this is my first attempt at a planted tank ;)

I use aquariumplants.com. I've always been very happy with all my purchases. And I've ordered on enough occasions that I can say they are consistently good with service and product. If you do decide to go online spend the extra bucks to have them overnighted. They arrive in great shape and if for some reason something goes wrong w/ overnight, the plants are guaranteed. Randy (manager) has shipped me replacements (at no cost to me) the one or two times something didn't arrive as expected. Their plants are snail & algae free, not something you can say about most purchases at those pet store chains and even alot of LFS.

yeah, mine where not snail free . Shipping plants overnight is crazy too lol. I've never even done that with fish. I sell plants every now and then and won't do anything faster then USPS priority which I guarantee and feel should always be guaranteed for plants except during winter, which is simply when I throw stuff out instead. I've had plants make it from Singapore to Wisconsin in fine shape and that takes over a week. I did not like aquariumplants.com substitutions either, an anubias =/= a sword . Oh the H. Corybosa was emersed growth too, that was upsetting as well. I ordered once and once was enough. The few plants from that order I still have look way better then when I first got them.

What plants do you usually ship?? I'd be interested, I know your plants would be beyond healthy!
I've had moss come from Malaysia to me, took over ten days, but arrived in fine shape.
Did you order from Aquatic Magic?? I like how my order came marked as "home decorations". I suspect that's how they circumvent US Customs, lol.

I ship whatever plants I have extras of, currently I am keeping stargrass, crypt. wenditti "green", Crypt. wenditti "tropica", lotus lilly, java moss, pennywort, H. polysperma, subwassertang, vals, anubais barteri, java fern, and probably a few more I am forgetting. I only ship when its warm enough out and of course there are free snails included.

I have ordered from Aquatic Magic and yeah they like to use that trick to get plants through customs lol.
