Natural Ways to Raise Alkalinity?

Afternoon folks,

To start off, my 20 gal. reading is: 0 nitrates, 0 nitrites, 0 chlorine, Total Hardness: 150, Alkalinity: 0, pH: 6.8.

To stabilize my pH, should the alkalinity not be higher? Like, way higher around the 120 mark? If so, suggestions for safely, if not naturally, raising it?

Are you using the testing strips by any chance? Those things are notoriously unreliable. To get a more accurate read on your GH and KH I would contact your local water supply (sometimes it is also posted online in a water quality report). You might not have to fiddle with anything at all.

And thanks for the advice. :)

The confirmation of the numbers as Izzy suggested is important. In the interim, I will just comment that if your numbers are reasonably accurate, that will be fine for soft water fish--characins (tetra and relatives), most catfish, cyprinids, etc. Selecting fish that suit your water is much easier for both you and the fish. We can discuss safe methods of raising GH and KH, if that becomes necessary.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business.
