Unhappy Mystery snail stays in shell in tank but explores on dry land?

I purchased a mystery snail a couple days ago and popped him in with my Betta. I haven't seen the Betta go anywhere near him so I am not sure if he's being bullied but he doesn't leave the shell. If I take him out, however, he is out in a heartbeat exploring and sliming around. In - on his side or upright partially hanging out, out - exploration time. Why does he hate the Betta tank so much? The ph is perfect. I could put him in with my goldies but I'm worried about the water temp being a little low.. Halp!

I don't have a kit but it's a cycled tank, there are live plants, and the betta seems fine.
