I saved a few ghost shrimp from a bullying Betta fish (before moving the Betta to a tank by himself), but today I found another dead ghost shrimp, and perhaps a dead snail (nerite)--he was upside down, so I've righted him and I'll see if he moves. I thought the other was dead, but he's moving and I saw him a bit today so hopefully he just needed some time to adjust.
My water parameters are good-- I just double checked them after removing the deceased shrimp (I'll give the snail some time to make sure he's really dead). No ammonia, nitrites, or nitrates. My pH is perhaps a little on the high side (about 7.6 or 7.7), but I've been allowing the driftwood to leech into the tank because I was told it would help lower the pH. It's not that dark (a very light tea color), and you can't notice it after a water change (about 15-25% 1x/week). Last one was Monday of this week.
The snails are new. They've only been in the tank for about 3 days. The ghost shrimp have been in for a couple weeks.
It's a standard 10 gallon tank with live plants: moss balls, java fern, water wisteria, water sprite, hygrophila, and ozelot.
The only other tank mates are a group of harlequin rasboras (8).
Yes it's filtered, and the temperature is about 78F.
Any ideas what could be going on? I thought maybe some of the shrimp were dying from the stress caused by the Betta (or if he weakened them somehow before I was able to move him). But they've been good for several days, so I thought things were on the upswing, but now another shrimp and maybe a snail...
