My sister is going to kill me!

My family all got together over at my place for Christmas today (we had decided to do it early because of everyone's work schedule), when my 2 youngest nephews (3 and 4 years old) discovered my fishtank. They were facinated! Then, the 4 year old started asking LOTS of questions. What does this do? What's this for? How does that work? And so on. He helped my do a pwc and test pH and Amonia (which for him was explained as the pee pee and poo poo test XD). When I ased him why he had so many questions, he said it was cuz he wanted to know how to do it because when they got home, he wanted a Gus (Betta) too and he wanted to take good care of it! He then of corse ran to his mom to explain to her that they needed to write an emergancy letter to Santa because he wanted a "shish wike Gus." The look she gave me was priceless! XD

Ha! Nice, get him started early. My 4 year old put the food in 4 of our tanks today. He turns the light on for his Betta every morning. Think your sister will get him one?

She said she still has the old 10 gal the older 2 boys kept their Goldfish in (before anyone says anything, it was the smaller breed, it was just 1, and it was before I knew anything about fish), but it's somewhere in storage. If she can find it, he will get to get one. It might not get a heater though. But their home is kept at a decent temp, so it shouldn't be too bad on the little guy. Between the 2 babies, a heater is gonna be the LEAST of his worries. I can just see the baby trying to feed the fish an entire jar of fish food and whatever else he can find! That was the one trying to get me to let him "pet the fishy!" The 4 year old is a better listener and very curious, so he might be able to hold off his baby brother from doing any damage.

Your sister might be miffed for a bit, but the lessons her boys learn will make her one happy Mom. I simply love the way you explained things to the 4 yo, so cute. Now we just have to hope the fish isn't loved to death.

Here's hoping Sookie!

She said she will wait until January or Febuary to go digging in storage. Too much to do atm. I think it will be fun for them

The way I explained a few things...
pH test: Good water tester. If it's not yellow or REALLY blue, it's good
Amonia: Pee and poop tester. It tells me if there is too much pee and poop. The more green it is, the ickier it is and Aunt * has to take water out to make it better
pwc: I have to take out water so that the water doesn't get full of pee and poop and put in fresh
Water Conditioner: This takes all the stuff out of the water that can make fish sick because fish can get sick just like you and me!
Heater: Keeps the fish from catching a cold
Filter: Takes icky stuff out of the water and puts in oxygen which is the stuff that everything needs to breath
Thermometer: Tells me how hot or cold the water is. If it's in the green part, it's okay. If it's low, the fish can get to cold and because they can't wear coats to get warm, they can die.
