I am sorry you did not get your answer. I know nothing of jack dempseys, but here is a bump, and I will see if I can find someone who might know.

It looks like a male to me =D But I can't be 100% sure, If it's a female the iridescent spots on it's face tends to spread all the way down to its jaws^_^ Maybe someone can come along and confirm this =D

I agree with above post. It's a male.

Looks like a big female. Males usually have long, trailing dorsal and anal fins

Still say it's a male. Can't go by fins. Females have blue blotches on their gill plate and less coloring in their body. Males will have no blotchiness on their gills but some speckling. At the size of yours sexing is pretty easy. When i get home i can post pics of male vs. female so you can see what i mean.

Its a female IMO. the pictures are hard to see but it has spangles (dots) on its jaw line.. This would indicate a female, males spangles stop before the jawline. Take a closer picture of the head in good light to confirm.

Edit:
Wow I just took a closer look and the top pic looks like a male.. ugh this is a tough one.. I'm torn now. I'm leaning towards male after looking at the top pic again.. The spots are the only way to tell I'm pretty sure.

I'll post pics of my pair in a few to show the difference.

Female pic is crummy (she is stressed from the male and i didn't want to freak her out more with the flash) but you can see iridescent spots/spangles on her jaw and not on the males.

Wow the female pic I took is horrible.. sorry for that, trust me they are there...
