Its possible with a big enough pond, good enough water quality and some quality food. Kept in a tank they will not get that big, maybe 16-18"ish. But IMO common/comet goldfish are pond fish and don't really belong in tanks. Fancy goldfish don't get nearly as large your looking at 5-10"ish depending on what kind.

BTW I noticed where you are located. Minnesota has one of the largest aquarium societies, they have monthly meeting in the metro area as well as auctions and fish shows. They are tons of fun. If you are interested, here is the homepage. Minnfish.com is the local forum.
